The golden rule that you must obey is that of the calorie deficit. You are probably aware that the amount of calories you consume has to be less than the amount of calories you use during the day. There are two ways to go about this.

Firstly, you can simply eat less which is what most people tend to try first. The unfortunate effect of this however is that it can leave you feeling tired, depressed and hungry. What’s more, if you are eating too little you may trigger your body’s starvation response which is to try and hold onto the body’s current stores of fat in order to ensure the body maintains these emergency stock piles of energy – because it thinks it is starving. Neither of these strategies are going to enable you to get ripped fast and the lack of calories may create a weak looking body as muscle wasteage may occur due to lack of protein.

A much better way is to eat plenty of food in the form of a balanced diet and to then create a calorie deficit by working out hard and often. Doing it this way will leave you invigorated and will help maintain your body’s muscle mass. This method is much more effective as you can keep it going long term as you are not left feeling exhausted and weak and you can maintain your current muscle mass.

The next key requirement to get ripped fast is to do weight training. This may not seem obvious at first but weight training is definitely the way to go to get ripped fast. There are three main reasons for this:

a) Weight training itself is very stressful and will work off a large amount of calories, particularly if you use whole body compound exercises such as: dead lifts, bench-press, squats and power cleans.

b) Unlike regular steady state aerobic exercises like running and cycling, heavy weight training gives your body a huge jolt. This provides your body’s metabolism a kick start and can keep it elevated for as much as 39 hours post workout. This length of elevation is considerably more than other forms of exercise and should be considered your secret weapon and should be top of your ‘how to get ripped fast’ to do list!

c) Weight training maintains or increases the muscle mass that you do possess. At rest muscle uses up more calories per hour than other tissue types (including fat) which means the greater the amount of muscle you have, the faster your metabolic rate will be… even at rest!

Don’t forget, if you neglect lifting weights and only do aerobic activity for weight loss then you may well lose muscle mass as well which will make losing fat even more difficult and could even leave you looking skinny with little muscle which is not particularly pretty.

As well as weight training, the other type of training you ought to be doing is H.I.I.T, this stands for high intensity interval training and is another fantastic way of raising your metabolic rate through the roof.

we talked about earlier, steady state exercise e.g. jogging at the same speed for half an hour will burn calories whilst you are exercising but it is not particularly stressful for the body and therefore doesn’t kick start your metabolism into overdrive. However, if you run as fast as you can for 2 minutes, then jog to recover for 1 minute, then run hard for another 2 minutes and jog for another 1 minute and repeat this 10-15 times this will definitely give your metabolism a significant boost. The intervals can be varied to suit your own fitness levels and you can alter the ratios accordingly.

Whilst protein is good, carbohydrate consumption is not so good. Aim to keep your carb intake low and try to eat them mainly in the morning, post training or late afternoon. This will ensure that you have time to burn off the energy before you sleep and stop it converting itself to more fat! Try to maintain a high protein intake. As a minimum you ought to be consuming a gram of protein for every pound of body weight. The two main reasons for this are that:

a) Protein is difficult for the body to breakdown and so therefore needs a lot of energy for the body just to digest, more so than carbohydrates. In fact some foods can strangely, because they require more energy to digest them than is actually in the food be beneficial for getting ripped. 

b) Secondly, if your diet doesn’t contain a sufficient supply of protein, you are much more likely suffer muscle wastage i.e. lose muscle, this as explained previously is bad for weight loss and getting ripped.

Eat smaller meals often. This leads to the body thinking that it has an indefinite and plentiful supply of fuel so it need not try to preserve the calories (fat tissue) that it does possess, this is what happens when you don’t eat or try a starvation diet – it doesn’t work. This is one of the most important points when considering how to get cut fast!

You have permission to be vain! Yes, that’s right I want you to be vain and pay attention to the way you look. You see, some people are so concerned with their weight they will do anything just to be a few pounds lighter and that is not always a good thing. For example, if you lost 6 pounds of fat tissue and gained 6 pounds of muscle mass you might not realise how much progress you had actually made and become frustrated, de-motivated and perhaps even give-up. Instead what you need to do is to listen to what the mirror is saying. You know your own body better than anyone.
